Charlyn R. Shickell, Ph.D.

August 29, 1938 - February 5, 2022

Charlyn R. Shickell, Ph.D of Lincoln, Nebraska was born in Wahoo, Nebraska on August 29, 1938 to LeRoy and Rose (Quass) Frahm and passed away on February 5, 2022 at the age of 83 years. For seven years, she was raised on a farm near Ithaca and attended country school District 102 of Saunders County. Her parents then moved to a farm near Neosha, MO where she attended another country school. Her parents moved back to Lincoln, NE for three years and then moved to the current family farm near Ceresco, NE.

She graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1955. She attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa where she was a member of the concert choir and girl's trio. She graduated from Westmar College in 1959 with a major in Religion and Business. Following college graduation, she moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she worked as a Youth Director and Director of Christian Education. She met her husband, Fred, while both were attending Westmar College and they were married in June of 1960 and lived in Ankeny, IA. In 1965, they moved to DeWitt, NE and then in 1983 moved to Lincoln, NE.

Charlyn received a Master's degree in 1984 and Doctoral degree in 1988 from the University of Nebraska in Marriage and Family Therapy. She was a Mental Health Therapist at the Lancaster County Community Mental Health Center in Lincoln for thirty-three years until the Center closed its doors in 2014. She continued her private practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist from 1989 to present.

Dr. Shickell served on the executive board of the Nebraska Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (NAMFT) since its inception. During her tenure, she served as Treasurer and President. She was on the Nebraska Licensure Board for eleven years, and served on the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Ethics Committee in Alexandria, VA for three years. She was an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and served as an Adjunct professor for the University of Nebraska Marriage and Family program.

Dr. Shickell has been active as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Her Mental Health team received the Hero of the Year Award for their work during the 911 Twin Towers disaster. She was a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing teams for Lancaster County.

She sang with the Sounds of the Spirit Gospel Singers of DeWitt, NE for thirty years. This group traveled performing concerts and also recorded four record albums. She was active in Zion United Methodist Church of DeWitt, NE as a Sunday School Teacher, choir director and organist, and was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE.

Dr. Shickell will be remembered as a champion for mental health and wholeness. She was an insightful, compassionate counselor, a valued friend, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cared deeply for her family. Her most treasured personal times were spent with family and friends at the family farm.

Dr. Shickell is survived by her daughter, Dana (Criss) Butler, grandchildren, Seth, Caleb, and Ethan Butler, Omaha, NE, Hannah Shickell, Tualatin, OR, Step-Grandchildren, Abigail and John Ryan, daughter-in-law Gwen Shickell (husband Matt Rourke), Tualatin, OR, brother, Roger Frahm, Ceresco, NE and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Fred Shickell, her son, Dr. Derek Shickell, West Des Moines, IA, granddaughter, Makayla Shickell, West Des Moines, IA, her parents LeRoy and Rose Frahm of Ceresco, NE, and her brother Marvin Frahm of Palm City, FL.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, February 11, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 pm at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 8550 Pioneers Blvd., Lincoln, NE. There will be a private, family graveside burial. In lieu of plants & flowers, memorial donations can be mailed to Nabity Funeral Home, P.O. Box 127, Wahoo, NE 68066.
