Funeral Services at Slater for Pioneer John Nielsen
Slater, Mar. 8 -- Funeral services for John Nielsen, 84, were held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the Riis Funeral Home at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church. The services were in charge of Rev. C. A. Lindberg, assisted by Rev. E. R. Rorem.
Mrs. A. J. Reinertson and Mrs. Kermit Granseth arranged the many beautiful floral offerings.
The Riis quartette composed of Marshall Clark, Homer Lewis, Arnold Engman and Weir Birkestrand sang three selections, "Have Thine Own Way, Lord," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "No Night There." The pallbearers were Chas. Skortman, Pete Nelson, Nels Sabo, A. A. Chader, Ole Frovick and Bert Sutter.
Mrs. Marie Clark and A. Shaws presented gifts of money to the missions in memory of Mr. Nielson. Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.
John Nielsen was born in Cherborough, Denmark in 1857 and died at his home in Slater, Mar. 3, 1941, at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 3 days. His marriage to Sena Marie Peterson took place May 14, 1872.
In 1880 Mr. Nielsen came to America and lived in Sheldahl. Three years later he was joined by his wife and son Niels. They moved to Fargo, N. D. where they made their home until 1889, when they moved to Slater to live.
Mr. Nielsen was engaged in the coal, grain and milling business in partnership with the late Ben Dueland for over 40 years. He retired from business about seven years ago on account of health. His wife and a daughter, Mrs. Katie Nelson, preceded him in death. He was a faithful and active member of the church, a devoted husband and father and a kind friend.
He is survived by his only son, Niels, of Slater; four grandchildren, Jules Nelson of Chicago; Mrs. Marguerite Roe of Madrid Sherman and Hubert Nielsen of Slater; also three great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Jensen of Butte, Mont.
Among those from out of town at the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Tjaden, Mrs. Marie Clark and daughters Oriett and Marium of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Roe and daughter June of Madrid; Jules Nelson of Chicago; Shelby Chader of Council Bluffs, and Mr. and Mr.s C. T. Larson of Huxley.
