STORY COUNTY PIONER DIES

MRS. LOVINIA WAKEFIELD, WIDOW OF THE LATE HANNIBAL C. WAKEFIELD PASSES AWAY AT GILBERT

Lovinia Wakefield, 81 years of age, one of the early settlers of Story County died at her home in Gilbert on Tuesday night at 11:30, after a long and trying illness, during all of which time she was confined to her bed. Her death was no doubt hastened when the companion of the past sixty years, her husband, preceded her to the great beyond on May 7th of this year.

Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield came to Story county about the time of their marriage and settled in a log cabin in what was destined to be the Ames of today. Their home at that time was the only human habitation between Ames and Nevada and in it they resided till they moved to Gilbert several years later where the family was raised and educated till they became on of the most distinguished families in this section of the state. Both husband and wife were closely identified with the business, social and religious life of the community and as they advanced in years and their children grew to maturity, they too took prominent place in the affairs not only of Story County but wherever they have chanced to reside.

Grandma Wakefield and Grandpa Wakefield as they were affectionately known to so many in the community lived to celebrate their golden wedding and this year on March 4th they celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their union, surrounded by their children and close friends.

It was soon after this that both became ill, with occasional rallies but finally on May 7th, Mr. Wakefield was called to his reward an at once signs were noted that his wife would not long survive the mate of her long and useful life.

Mrs. Wakefield is survived by ten children, six sons and four daughters, four grandsons and three grand daughters. They are Mrs. Laura Maynard of Lyman, Colo.; Hannibal an Arthur Wakefield, of Ashland, Wis.; William, John and Simon Wakefield of Ames, Misses Emma and Polly Wakefield of Gilbert, Charles Wakefield of Lincoln, Neb., and Miss Maude Wakefield the county superintendent of schools for Story County located at Nevada.

The funeral was held today from the Congregational church of which Mrs. Wakefield had long been an attendant, the services being conducted by the Rev. H. Wessler, the pastor of the church who paid a touching tribute to the memory of the deceased and her long life of usefulness and devotion to her home and church.

The interment took place in the Gilbert cemetery where the aged woman was laid to rest beside the remains of her husband, who had preceded her by so short a period.
