PROMINENT CITIZEN DIES SUDDENLY

William Edward Masters, son of Andrew and Sarah Masters was born at Monterey, Highland County, Virginia, on June 28, 1851. He died at Maxwell, Iowa June 9, 1917 at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 12 days.

He was the eldest of his fathers family. His boyhood was spent in the historic Shenandoah Valley. At the time the Civil War began he was nine years of age. He followed his fathers regiment in the campaigns in which it was engaged. After Gettysburg he went north as a prisoner with his father and remained in the north until after Appomattox.

His mother died when he was fourteen. He then roamed about through the north and north-west, for a time, returning in 1872 to Highland County where he was married on the 17th of July to Miss Margaret Pritt. Eleven children came into their home of whom all were spared to grow to maturity. One of them however, Mrs. Sarah E. Frawley died in recent years. The family moved in 1884 to Illinois and in 1902 to Elsbery, Missouri. In 1905 they came to Maxwell to live.

While living at Lexington, Ill. Mr. Masters joined the Methodist church. He later transferred his membership to Maxwell, where he remained until his death. He also was a longtime member of the Odd Fellows fraternity.

Besides the bereaved wife there survive of his immediate family a brother in California and two sisters, one in Illinois and the other in Virginia, and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Florence Leman of Circola, Ill., Mrs. Lillie Mackin [should be McMackin] of Crescent City, Ill., Mrs. Carrie Snyder of Bellevue, Mrs. Mary Allen of Des Moines, Joseph F. Masters of Graylin, Cal., Daniel Masters of Newton, Mrs. Ruby McConnell, of Collins, and Catharine, John H. and Pansy, who are still at home. Also there were 24 grandchildren, of whom 19 are living.

William Masters was a man who loved his home devotedly. He lived in the lives of his children. He was industrious to a marked degree. He was widely informed on many topics and a very interesting conversationalist. He gave much careful thought to religious matters. He will be sincerely mourned by a host of friends.
