OBITUARY

FRANK M. BALDWIN

Word comes today of the death in Maryland of Frank M. Baldwin, long one of the most prominent business men of this county and head for more than twenty five years of the firm of Baldwin & Maxwell, with headquarters, first at Iowa Center later at Maxwell. Mr. Baldwin as born November 10, 1829, and was therefore more than 87 years of age. He had been living in recent years at the home of his daughter, Jennie, Mrs. Merritt and it was there that he died. His wife and daughter and two sons Charles and Will survive him. An elder daughter, Millie, married Dr. F. J. Will and died as a young woman. It is the impression that his body will be brought back to Maxwell for burial.

We have neither the time nor the data today for a proper notice of Mr. Baldwin; but it does not take long to say that no one stood before him in a business sense in the years of the county's most rapid expansion. Baldwin and Maxwell started their business in 1864m and by the latter '60s and through the '70s they were unquestioningly handling much the largest volume of business of any firm in Story county. He was a man of most admirable character, and his demise will recall to nearly every one of the old settlers of the county a vast number of most pleasant reminiscences.
