Mrs. Mary Smith, 79, widow of the late John C. Smith who died August 14, died at her home at Fernald, Tuesday afternoon, after a brief illness. She had been failing rapidly since the passing of her husband.
Mrs. Smith, who as Mary Montgomery, was born at Simcoe, Canada, August 7, 1860, was married to John C. Smith, December 13, 1883, and had lived in the vicinity of McCallsburg or Fernald during her entire married life.
No children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith and with his death four month ago, she was left with only a sister Libbie Montgomery and a brother Ed Montgomery, both of Jewell, as her immediate survivors. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Mrs. Belle Ricketts of Ames.
Since the death of "Uncle Johnnie" as her husband was familiarly known in the neighborhood, "Aunt Mary" had divided her time between her home at Fernald and with her sister at Jewell.
The funeral will be held Thursday, with prayer service in the home at 1 p.m. and the funeral service at 1:30 at the St. Paul's Lutheran church in Fernald with Dr. J. O. Simon in charge. Burial will be in the cemetery at McCallsburg.
