Funeral Rites for Popular Maxwell Man

Maxwell, May 24--Funeral rites for Howard B. Couch, 56, livestock buyer of Maxwell, who died Thursday evening at his home here, were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the home. The service was in charge of Rev. De Loss Marken, of College Avenue, Des Moines, a friend of the family and the Rev. Judson T. Perkins, pastor of local Methodist church of which the deceased was a member. Miss Gayle Gildner of Marshalltown sang "Crossing the Bar" and "Abide in Me." The floral offerings were most beautiful and profuse.The flower carriers were Mrs. Venice Moore, Mrs. Etha Maxwell, Mrs. Forest Cooper, Mrs. Ernie Glasgow and Mrs. Joe Young. The pall bearers were Harry Gibson, Geo. Cole, Frank Barton, Dan Peters, J. M. Atterberry and Ernie Glasgow.
He was a man of industry and thrift, beloved by his family and respected by a wide circle of both social and business friends.
Howard Benjamin Couch, son of John and Catharine Couch, was born in Couch, West Virginia, on March 25, 1883, and died at his home in Maxwell, Iowa, ono May 18, 1939, aged 56 years, 1 month and 23 days.
The first eighteen years of his life were spent in the old home in West Virginia. He then went to California where he lived for several years. In November 1908 he came to Maxwell. On May 26, 1909 he was united in marriage to Merlie Pearson at Maxwell. Two daughters were born to them, one of whom died in infancy. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Maxwell for about five years after which they moved to town. For the past twenty-five years they have lived here in Maxwell, being engaged in various kinds of business. For many years he had been a member of the Methodist church.
He was a good husband and father, a kindly neighbor and held in high esteem by all who knew him.
Surviving are the following: his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Livingston, at home; three brothers, John M. Couch, Santa Barbara, California, James B. Couch, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and T. C. Couch, Des Moines, Iowa; three sisters: Mrs. Forest (Kathaleene) Allen, Santa Barbara, California, Mrs. C. E. (Marguerite) McCulloch ad Mrs. Raymond (Lida) Gibson, both of Henderson, West Virginia. Many other relatives and a large number of friends also mourn his death.
Following the service at the home, the body was accompanied to the Peoria cemetery where it was laid to rest in the family lot.
