THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, July 19, 2005.

Joanne Norton, 78, of Ames, died of Parkinson 's disease at Rolling Green Village in Nevada where she had been a resident for more than three years. The body has been cremated, and at her request, no services are planned.

Joanne, the daughter of Chalmers and Marie Parker, was born in Columbus, Ohio, where she lived most of her childhood. She attended public schools in Columbus and received bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in botany from The Ohio State University. Following her graduate work, she was on the faculty at the University of Texas for about two years. She married Don Norton Aug. 6, 1952, in Columbus. They lived in college Station, Texas, for about seven years before moving to Ames in 1959.

She was an avid gardener who grew much of her won vegetables. She bred daylilies for several years and was active in the American Hemerocallis Society and published several articles on daylily care and genetics. Also active in the tropical fish business, she became an authority on livebearers. She researched tropical fish genetics and operated a wholesale business. Known nationally and internationally for her work with fish, she was an invited speaker to many state, national and international conferences and shows. She began a specialty fish club which is still extant. She was a prolific writer of articles dealing with tropical fish, especially genetics.

She is survived by her husband; three children, Wayne (companion Debi Stambaugh) of Escondido, Calif., Glenn (wife, Paula) of Ames and Carol (husband Stephen Madden) of Burlington, Vt.; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth (Eliza) Madden, David Norton, and Kevin Norton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Shirley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa
