Funeral Services Held for Early Day Settler

Zearing, Jan. 13--A large crowd was in attendance at the funeral services for G. W. Rhodes early settler in the Illinois Grove vicinity, who passed away in Des Moines, Friday morning held at the Evangelical church in Zearing Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with services in charge of Rev. Harvey Moon at Union assisted by Rev. R. E. Kerney.Vocal selections were rendered by Clyde Upchurch, Orpha Hankins, Myrtle Martin and Glen McBride, accompanied by Mrs. Leta Bailey at the piano.
The beautiful flowers were in charge of Mrs. Sylvia Bump, Mrs. Ruth Snowgren and Mrs. Gertrude Greenberg. The pallbearers were Maynard Brown, Frank Rhodes, Art Rash, Floyd Rhodes, Hardy Rhodes and Walter Hauser. Burial was in the Zearing mausoleum.
George Washington Rhodes, son of Peachy and Mary Rhodes was born on a farm near Eldora July 17, 1857, being one of family of twelve children. He grew to manhood in Hardin county.
He was unite in marriage to Minnie Lundy, a daughter of Daniel Lundy of New Providence Dec. 31, 1884. They established their home on Mr. Rhodes farm in Marshall county, living there ten years. For five years they farmed at Mrs. Rhodes' girlhood home then moved to their own farm where they resided twenty-eight years when their house burned down and thy made their home on a farm near Bangor retiring two years ago to make their home in Des Moines where Mr. Rhodes passed away Friday morning Jan. 6, 1939, at the age of 81 years, 5 months, 13 days.
He is survived by his widow, two sons, Glen and Cecil of Roland and three daughters Ella, Mrs. Herman Kurth of Zearing; Ila, Mrs. Claude Harrington, of Bangor; Germa, Mrs. Paul Bantz of Des Moines; eleven grandchildren Graham Warner, of Rhodes; Colleen, Shirley and Larry Ray Rhodes; Agnes and Gladys Kurth; Marion Watson; George and Bernard Harrington; Beverley and Robert Bantz, also one brother John of Des Moines and one sister Mrs. Flora Brown of Grundy Center. The eldest daughter, Mrs. Hazel Watson passed away April 19, 1935 in Elma, Washington. Two brothers and seven sisters have also preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Friends church at Honey Creek, later transferring hi membership to the Friends church at Illinois Grove when the family made their home in that vicinity. He was an active worker for the church and generous in its support. He served the Illinois Grove school as president of the board many years He was kind loving husband and father as well as a man of keen business perception. He engaged extensively in farming but was never too busy to go good for a neighbor. He made a wide acquaintance of friends who together with many relatives mourn his passing.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral services were: Mrs. Nettie Strother and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lundy, all of Eldora; Harley Higgenbottom of Steamboat Rock; Maynard Brown of Grundy Center; Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Hauser, Walter Hauser, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Mabie of Whitten.
W. M. Chizek of Garwin; Dale Rash, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bantz and children and Mrs. G. W. Rhodes, all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Rhodes and children, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Rhodes and son, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Harrington and sons.
