Funeral Services Held for Mrs. Newgaard

Special to the Journal:
McCallsburg, Jan. 16--The funeral of Mrs. O. M. Newgaard, whose death occurred Jan. 7, 1939 was held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 in McCallsburg and at Bergen church in Roland at two o'clock of which she was a member with Rev. M. O. Sumstad her pastor, officiating. He spoke comforting words to the bereaved and all who gathered there to pay their last respect.

The deceased was born Feb. 16, 1854 in Shold, Norway, the daughter of Ole and Martha Olsen.

There she lived until she immigrated to this country in 1875 at the age of 22 years, arrived in Pontiac, Ill., where she was married to Olaus Newgaard, Nov. 13, 1875. They lived near Pontiac, Ill., for five years and from there they moved to Cambridge, Iowa, where they resided for 17 years.

Then moved to a farm north of McCallsburg, Iowa, where they resided until 1924, when they moved to McCallsburg where she had since resided. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Newgaard.

Her husband died June 15, 1924 and three children, Johnny, Rachel and Lewis having preceded her in death.

She leaves three sons and three daughters, Ben of Jewell, Ia.; Lillie Wolden [should be Walden] of Gardner, N. Dak.; August of Cambridge, Ia.; Nellie Clark of Los Angeles, Calif.; Linnie Anders of Stewart, Minn.; Elmer of McCallsburg, Ia., who were all present at the funeral.

She also leaves 20 grand children and 15 great grandchildren besides a brother Ole Olsen of Brooklyn, N. Y. and two sisters in Norway.

The pall bearers were G. M. Malmin, Tygo Caltvedt, Andy Thompson, Peter Egenes, Elwood Ose, and Ernie Sandvick.

The choir rendered several favorite songs and the flowers were many and beautiful.

Mrs. Newgaard was a member of Bergen church and was an active worker in church and social activities until her age and health prevented.

She was loved and esteemed by a wide circle of friends and will be sadly missed by her family, friends and neighbors for whom she always had a kind word and friendly greeting.
