DEATHS

ORA "DOC" WILLIAM COZZENS

Ora "Doc" William Cozzens, 80, died Friday, July 19, 1985, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Ia. Death was attributed to a heart ailment.

He was born in Colo, Ia., on Dec. 19, 1904, and was the youngest son of Dr. James and Hattie Sparrow Cozzens.

On June 14, 1929, he entered into marriage with Ilo Couser on the Couser family farm at Zearing. To this union was born a son, James Arthur, and two daughters, Austa Marie and Sarah Ann.

On June 10, 1929, he graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of science degree in vocational agriculture. He taught vo-ag and coached basketball in Illinois for 15 years. He then entered an agri-business career with Pillsbury Mills and Farmland Industries. He retired from Farmland in 1969. He initiate the Iowa Agricultural Commercial Sales Program for Farmland.

Since his retirement, Mr. Cozzens has been active in community projects. He was co-founder of the Low Rent Housing Project for Senior Citizens in Zearing. He served on the Senior Citizen Housing Board for three years and was an active member of the Zearing Town and Country Club. He was also chairman of the parade committee for a time which included the Zearing Centennial Parade. In recent years he worked with the Story County Council on Aging. He carried Meals on Wheels for seven years in Zearing.

He had been a member of Pacific Lodge 469 of Zearing since 1963 and was worshipful master for three years. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing.

Survivors include his wife, Ilo, of Zearing, a son, James Cozzens of Fort Smith, Ark., two daughters, Austa (Mrs. Donald) White of Plainfield, Ia., and Sarah (Mrs. Robert) Turner of Waterloo, Ia., six grandchildren, a great grandchild and a sister, Elva Nolte of Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents: two brothers, Frank and Charles, and two sisters, May Hambly and Jane Rosser.

Funeral services will be Tuesday July 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing with Rev. Jeff Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Zearing Cemetery.

Masonic services were scheduled for Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing.
