Anna Reed, Longtime County Official Dies in Ames Sunday at Age 82
A woman who spent a quarter of a century in the Story County Courthouse died in Ames Sunday.
Mrs. Anna W. Reed, 82, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Sunday in Mary Greeley Hospital after a two-weeks illness.
She was born Dec. 2, 1884 in Washington County, Iowa. She was educated in the Washington County schools and moved from Napier to Ames in 1924.
In Ames, she worked at the Fair Store, was manager of the Valentine shop in the fourth ward and in 1935 took a job as deputy county treasurer for Story County.
She served in this capacity from 1935 to 1950, and in 1950 she became Story County recorder, serving 10 years until her retirement in 1960.
She was married to Fred Woodburn in 1904. Mr. Woodburn died in 1912 and he married in 1916 to James Leslie Reed, who died in 1947.
Survivors include one son by her first marriage, M. L. Woodburn of Omaha, one son by her second marriage, Wayne A. Reed of Iowa City and three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Wells of Des Moines, Mrs. Clifford Berry of Pasadena, Calif., and Mrs. Maurice Hemmen of Buena Vista Park, Calif. Also surviving are 10 grand children and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.
Mrs. Reed was a member of the Business - Professional Women, Golden Agers, the County Officers Association an the Collegiate Presbyterian Church.
Funeral Services will be held from the Collegiate Presbyterian Church at 10:30 Wednesday, with Rev. John G. Davies officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:15 p.m. at the Amesworth Cemetery [should be Ainsworth Cemetery.] Adams Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established and it is asked that all contribution be left at Collegiate Presbyterian Church.
