Last rites for Wayne O. Slocum Held in Des Moines
Wayne Orville Slocum, of Poplar Bluffs, Missouri, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Slocum, Johnston, Iowa, former residents of Nevada an Milford Township, passed away on Sunday morning, June 22, 1947 at the Veterans hospital in St. Loui, Mo. Wayne was born on a farm near Ankeny, Ia. on Sept. 10, 1909; moved to Nevada with his parents in 1920 and graduated from Milford Township High School in 1928. Five years later the family moved to Des Moines, where he was converted and later entered the ministry.
He was united in marriage to Wilma Latch of Iowa Falls, on Aug.2, 1933. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and six children, Beverly, 13, Melvin, 12, Donald, 11, Deloris, 9, David, 7, Raymond, 5, his father and mother of Johnston, one sister, Mrs. Hazel Lyon of Cambridge, Ia., one niece and nephew, Joann and Norman Lyon, a favorite aunt, Mrs. Albert Fausch of Sheldahl, who was raised with the family, a host of relatives and friends. A brother, Harold, preceded him in death six years ago.
Services were held at the Open Bible church in Des Moines, on Thursday, June 26, with Rev. Frank Smith officiating. Three cousins, Marian Laveeta and Evelyn Smith sang "I'd Rather Have Jesus," "Sunrise," "The Eastern Gate." The pall-bearers were cousins of the deceased, Robert and Clayton Smith, Albert Cooper, Myrland and Robert Fausch, Olan Nyswonger.
We know that Wayne will have many stars in his crown because of his great burden for lost souls and the many influenced by his ministry.
