Funeral Services Held in Story City For Chester Handeland
Story City, July 2 -- (INS) -- Funeral services were held in St. Petri Lutheran church in Story City Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock following a prayer service at his home in Roland for Chester Handeland. The Rev. S. T. Nelson officiated and burial was in the Story City cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased Clarence Handeland, Gilbert Handeland, Elmer Handeland, Ordean Handeland, Otis Weltha and Joseph Weltha.
Chester Handeland was born in Souda Stavanger Amt, Norway on November 27, 1862. His parents were Kjostof and Ingeborg Berdolen Handeland. He suffered stroke on January 8, 1947 and had been bedfast until he passed away at his home in Roland on June 25, 1947 at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 28 days. Preceding him in death were three brothers and two sisters. He was baptized by Pastor Ulrik Torno and attended a Lutheran school in Norway. He was confirmed by Pastor Haalst in 1877. He left Norway on March 23, 1889 and came to Marshalltown. On December 24, 1892 he was united in marriage to Hannah Weltha. To this union was born eight children one of whom died in infancy. They are Carl of McCallsburg, Osbourne of Chicago, Ill., Emma (Mrs. Milford Britson) of Roland, John of Clarinda, Milford of Story City and Miriam and Arthur of St. Paul, Minn.
Mr. Handeland rented land for many years in Hamilton and Story counties and in 1920 bought a farm west of Randall where he lived until 1942 when they moved to Story City. He lived there for 2 1/2 years and then moved to Roland which has since been their home.
He was a member of the Elim Lutheran church in Randall for about twenty years. After moving to Story City he joined the St. Petri Lutheran church of which he has since been a member.
Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his passing a wide circle of relatives and friends. He was a very kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by all.
