Funeral Rites for Sam A. Johnson At Story City Church

Story City, March 18 -- Funeral services were held in the St. Petri Lutheran church in Story City Friday afternoon March 14, at 2 o'clock with Rev. S. T. Nelson officiating for Sam A. Johnson, 73, who died Tuesday, March 11. A prayer service was held at the home at 1:30. Special music was provided at the church by Mrs. Robert Hermanson, who sang, "I'm But a Stranger Here," and "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus' Name." Burial was in the family lot in the Jewell cemetery. The six sons, Carl, Milford, Lawrence, Fred, Arthur and Simon, were casket bearers.

A total of $102.00 was given to various benevolences in memory of the deceased.

Among those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. Nels Jacobson, Mission, Kan.; Mrs. Ed Ellston, MR. and Mrs. Gerald Ellston and son, Arthur Donhowe, all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Johnson, Mrs. Vincent Keeler, Mrs. Ivan Larson of Blue Earth and Austin, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Ivar Johnson of Dennison; Mr. and Mrs. Neal Johnson of Sioux Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Johnson, Mrs. Cena Osmundson of Ft. Dodge; John Donhowe and Halvor Kloster of Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Donhowe from Ottumwa.

Sam A. Johnson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew H. Johnon, was born near Gilbert, Iowa, April 16, 1873. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. Petri Lutheran church at Story City, Iowa.

On March 29, 1900, he was united in marriage to Bertha Margaret Donhowe. Eleven children were born to this union. Two sons have preceded him in death.

Mr. Johnson farmed around Story City. He has been a faithful member of his church, regular in his attendance and liberal in proportion to his means. The Word of God had a definite place in his own life and in his home. His walk through life was undergirded with the principles of his Saviour whom he confessed in conversation and life.

Several strokes and a weakened heart confined him to his home the greater part of the past year. He passed away at his home Tuesday, March 11, at the age of 73 years, 10 month and 26 days.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife, seven sons, two daughters, 18 grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.
