Last Rites for Nels Ersland Held in Slater

Funeral services for Nels Ersland were held Saturday afternoon, 1:30 o'clock at the home, where a brief prayer service was held at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran church. The services were in charge of Rev. P. E. Onstad.

The beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. Glenn Fausch and Miss Edna Hauge. A large number of gifts of money to the Missions, Sunset Home, Children's Home and Sunday School were given by relatives and friends of Mrs. Ersland. Otis Ihle sang a solo, "I'm But a Stranger Here," Rev. P. E. Onstad sang, "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name" and Miss Emma Tweet of Minneapolis sang, "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say."

The pall bearers were: J. C. Ersland, Harold Ersland, Albert Lehman, C. R. Sydnes, John Sydnes and Glenn Fausch.

Nels Ersland was born Oct. 9, 1879 at Slater, Ia., and died at his home in Slater Jan. 1, 1947 at the age of 67 years, 2 months and 22 days. His parents were Jacob and Johannah Ersland. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lincoln Lutheran church. His marriage of Julia Sydnes of Huxley took place Sept. 27, 1907 and they made their home in Slater.

In 1913 they moved to Thor, Ia., where they lived for 22 years. While there he was manager of the elevator. They moved back to Slater in 1935 and have since made their home here. He served several years as custodian at the Slater school and was love by all the school children. He has been ill for several years.

He is survived by his devoted wife, an adopted daughter, Mrs. Merlin Kirkwood of Des Moines, his mother, Mrs. Jacob Ersland of Duluth, Minn.; four sisters, Mrs. Marie Paulson of Forest City, Mrs. Mabel Stevens of Hood River, Ore., Mrs. Ruth Griffith [should be Griffin] and Miss Olive Ersland of Springfield, Ill., two brothers, Ben Ersland of Duluth, Minn., and Jerome Ersland of Orr, Minn., and a large number of relatives and friends.

Among those from a distance who attended the services were: Mrs. Jacob Ersland and Mrs. Ben J. Ersland of Duluth, Minn., Mrs. Marie Ersland and Mrs. Joe Westby of Forest City, Mrs. Howard Flowers of Iowa Falls, Mrs. K. E. Ersland of Estherville, Jerome Ersland of Orr, Minn., and his daughter, Betty Ruth and Joan of Ames, Miss Viola Walden of St. Louis, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Kirkwood, Dr. and Mrs. Fred Peel and daughters, Muriel and Darlene, Mrs. H. J. Hillestad, Ben and Ed Tesdell all from Des Moines, Miss Cora Smith of Fort Dodge, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Newman and Mrs. Hobart Johnson of Oskaloosa, Mrs. Celia Benshoff of Boone, Haley Nervig and Rev. and Mrs. Lewis Malmin of Nevada.
