THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, July 13, 2005.

Earl L. Peterson, 78, of Ames, died Sunday, July 10, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a long battle with leukemia. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 14, at Gilbert Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tom Prochnow officiating. Burial will be in South St. Petri Cemetery in rural Gilbert.

Earl L. Peterson was born May 21, 1927, in Ames, son of Emil and Nettie (Jacobson) Peterson. As a youngster, he attended Fernald School and Gilbert High School and was active in 4-H and FFA showing Shorthorn cattle. He married Alpharetta DeMoss on Sept. 19, 1948, at Gilbert Lutheran Church, of which he was a lifelong member. An ardent farmer throughout his life, he loved tending his livestock and crops. He was a charter member of the Gilbert Lions Club and a member of the Heart of Iowa Co-op and NFO. He was an avid rock collector and a member of the Bentsen Grove Park Rock Club. He also enjoyed photography, traveling, fishing and restoring antique tractors and engines. He also helped to maintain the South St. Petri Cemetery for many years.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Tracy (Art) Yadon of Manhattan, Mont., and Terri (Mark) Mahl of Reno, Nev.; two sons, Rod (Ronna) Peterson of Ankeny and Kevin (Lynn) Peterson of rural Ames; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman (Theola) Peterson of Gilbert; one sister, Esther (Mario) Perez of Woodstock, Ill.; two nieces and seven nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Peterson; infant brother; one niece and one nephew.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at Gilbert Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to his church.

Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames is assisting the family with arrangements.
