DEATH CALLED AN AGED PIONEER

MRS. ELLEN STUART WAS A NATIVE OF BALLARD GROVE

Ames, Sept. 23--In the death of Mrs. Ellen Stuart, 77, widow of the late Charles F. Stuart, Civil war veteran, one of the pioneers of the Ballard Grove neighborhood has passed away.

Mrs. Stuart, who died at her home 212 Washington avenue on Thursday was born on a farm in the Ballard Grove neighborhood, in a home established by her parents, when they arrived here in the early '50s from Indiana.

Mr. Stuart, who was born in Ohio, served four years in the Civil war in the Ninth Iowa regiment, and was a Confederate prisoner 11 months. He was in both Florence and Andersonville prisons, and finally escaped. He died in Ames nine years ago.

Mrs. Stuart had been a member of the Women's Relief corps for many years and also of the First Methodist church where she was a devoted attendant at services until her death.

She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Maud Taylor and Mrs. Gertrude Taylor, who married brothers, and Mrs. Bessie Allen and a son, Clark Stuart, all of Ames. There are 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Elliott of Des Moines; two brothers, George Elliott of Des Moines and W. C. Elliott living in Oregon, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Elliott of Detroit.

Other relatives in the county are W. F. Stratton of Nevada, who is a cousin and Mrs. W. R. Coin of Nevada, a niece.

The funeral will be held at Ames Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and interment will be by the side of the husband, who died nine years ago.
