PIONEER COLLINS WOMAN IS DEAD

MRS. MARY TORRY PASSED AWAY AND FUNERAL WILL BE WEDNESDAY

Special to the Journal.
Collins, Aug. 30--Mrs. Mary Torry, 76, pioneer woman of this community died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tim Shickell on the old Torry homestead 3 1/2 miles northeast of Collins Sunday morning at 7:30, after a lingering illness, the last nine weeks of which she had been confined to her bed.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. at the United Brethren church in Collins, followed by interment in the Collins cemetery by the side of her husband who died in 196. Rev. Hougham, her pastor, will be in charge of the service.

Mrs. Torry whose maiden name was Mary Farthergill [should be Fothergill], a daughter of John and Elizabeth Farthergill, was born at Sycamore, Illinois, June 15, 1956 [should be 1856.] She grew to womanhood in that community and it was there that she was married to John W. Torry, December 5, 1872.

They continued their home in Illinois until 1885 when they came to Story county and located on the farm northwest of Collins, on which Mrs. Torry died. It was in 1908 that they retired from the farm and moved into Collins where Mr. Torry died February 18, 1916.

Five children were born to John and Mary Torry, all of them surviving the parents. They are Mrs. Hattie Baker of Alhambra, Calif., Arthur Torry of Collins, Roy Torry of near Nevada, Mrs. Effie Shickell of near Collins and Jeffrey Torry of Collins.

She also leaves 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Torry had been a member of the United Brethren church practically all of her life, associating with that denomination as a girl in Illinois. She was a charter member of the Dalton congregation near the old homestead and after moving into Collins transferred her membership to the Collins congregation and died steadfast in her religious faith.
