Death of Mrs. Mary Hale
Obituary
(The Collins Gazette - August 22, 1908)
Mary Sullen was born in Onodega County New York. She came with her parents to Colo, Story County, Iowa in 1876. She died at her home in Collins Township Story County August 13th 1908 aged 47 years 10 months 18 days after an illness of 10 days with erysipelas. The immediate cause of death was blood poisoning.
The funeral was held at the M.E. Church of Collins Sunday afternoon. Reverend L.A. Fleming preached an eloquent and comforting sermon suitable for the solemn occasion. A large choir sang the hymn with tender expression. Beautiful floral tributes were evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held by her neighbors and friends who with the general public could not all be accommodated inside the building.
The I.O.O.F. attended in a body in sympathy to their fellow member Mr. Hale in his sudden sore bereavement.
The interment was at Evergreen Cemetery where the exercises were concluded. The pall bearers were A.H. and J.L. Kelderhouse, Fred Holtby, Percy Tuft, John Southern and Albert Heintz.
Mrs. Hale's death was a shock to the neighborhood. The short sickness made the death a sad surprise. All available medical skill was used and everything possible was done to avoid the final issue but without avail. She was unconscious fully a day before she died. Her death was easy.
She was one of the best known in the vicinity, was much respected and her pleasant greeting will be often missed in town and country. She left no surviving children. The primary mourners are Mr. Hale, her husband; Fred Hale, adopted son; and Mrs. Anna Ashelford, her sister. Her parents are dead and their children only included the two girls.
Those from a distance at the funeral were Mrs. Anna Ashelford of Sycamore, Illinois; Andy Hale, wife and family of Rhodes, Iowa; J.I. Hale and daughter of Fort Dodge; Thomas Hale of Iowa Falls. The three gentlemen named are brothers of the bereaved husband.
The bereaved have the sympathy of this community.
