Vern Wilson Millard, 87, of Ames died of a heart attack on Monday, June 27, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames with burial in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Vern Wilson Millard was born July 11, 1917, in Wapello County, the son of Oliver and Effie (Ritter) Millard. He graduated from Blakesburg High School in 1936 and John Fletcher College in Oskaloosa in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46 and was stationed in the Pacific theater. He achieved the rank of lieutenant junior grade. He married Ruby Doggett Sept. 3, 1944, in Ames. He was an active member of the Ames Church of the Nazarene, Golden K Kiwanis and VFW Post 1107, where he served as quartermaster for more than 25 years. He also was very active in local volunteer work. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1985.
He is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Forrest) Mauritz of Dubuque, Mary (Dean) Jordison of Gilbert and Marcia (Dennis) Henderson of Clive; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne (Isabelle) Millard of Ottumwa; two sisters, Gladys Anderson of Mesa, Ariz., and Carol (Stan) Miller of Sun City, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruby, in 1999.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
