Funeral Services for Stephen Kurtz Held on Wednesday
Funeral services for Stephen J. Kurtz, 80, who died at the home of his son Dr. Frank Kurtz at Aitkin, Minn., Sunday were held Wednesday afternoon. A short prayer service was held at the home followed by the funeral proper at the church at Iowa Center.
There was a large attendance of neighbors, friends and relatives to express their love and sympathy for the deceased and for the family in their sorrow.
A man's quartet from Maxwell sang three hymns that added much to the service and was much appreciated.
Rev. Pence of the Nevada Church of Christ and Rev. Klooz of the Nevada Evangelical church, assisted in the services at the home, the church and at the cemetery and Rev. Charles Pickford preached the sermon.
Interment was made in the cemetery at Iowa Center.
Stephen J. Kurtz was born, Nov. 7, 1855 in Womelsdorf, Berks county, Pennsylvania. Moved with his parents, Jacob and Alvina Kurtz, when a year old and remained there until the age of sixteen when he and his father moved near Springfield, Missouri. The family moved to Iowa four years later settled near Iowa Center.
He was united in marriage October 25, 1885 to Mary E. Brown and to this union two children were born: Dr. Frank J. Kurtz of Aitken, Minnesota and Cory Kurtz of Nevada, Iowa.
In the fall of 1887 he moved with his family to western Nebraska. After two years they returned to Iowa Center. They moved to Kossuth county in 1892 and after four years returned to Iowa Center where they have since resided.
He departed from this life at the age of 80 years, one month and one day, December 8, 1935 in Aitkin, Minnesota at the home of his eldest son, where he and his wife had planned to spend the winter.
Mr. and Mrs. Kurtz were united with the Iowa Center church the fourteenth of January, 1900.
He leaves to mourn his death besides his wife and two sons and their wives, five grandchildren, Byron and Stephen Kurtz of Aitkin, Minnesota and June and Mary and Esther Kurtz of Nevada, Iowa. Two brothers, S. W. Kurtz of Des Moines and O. S. Kurtz of Long Beach, California.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two sisters, and one brother.
He lead an honorable, upright life, taking an active interest in civic affairs. He was much loved by all who knew him and never knew an enemy. Kindness and consideration governed his worthwhile life and have left a beautiful memory to our grieving hearts.
