Funeral Services for Elias Hemmingson

Special to the Journal.
Huxley, July 20--Funeral services for Silas Hemmingson were held Thursday afternoon. There was a brief service at the home at one o'clock and at the Fjeldberg Lutheran church at two o'clock.

At the church, the service opened with scripture reading by Dr. J. N. Anderson and was followed by a vocal solo "On Wings of Snow" by Mrs. L. S. Kloster of Des Moines. Dr. Anderson preached the sermon, using as his text John 16 verse 22 "And Ye Now Therefore Have Sorrow But I Will See You Again, and Your Heart Shall Rejoice and Your Joy no Man Taketh From You." The song "I'm But a Stranger Here" was sung by the choir, and another solo "Den Store Hvide Flok Vi Se" by Mrs. L. S. Kloster. There were many beautiful floral offerings, as well as donations to the missions by many relatives and friends in memory of the deceased.

The pall bearers were Oscar Olson, Albert Hitz, Clarence Honnold, Walter Gfeller, Ben Alleman and Art Lehman. Interment was in the Fjelberg cemetery.

The funeral was largely attended and there were many from a distance. Among those were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Johnson of Fairview, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Hogbin of near Manly, Mrs. Ellen Toft, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Hillestad, Martin and Amos Houge, Mrs. L. S. Kloster, Miss Martha Lee of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Anderson and Mrs. and Mrs. John Queensland of Randall.

Elias Hemmingston was born on a farm in Polk county May 1, 1872. His parents were John and Ingborg Hemmingson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Fjeldberg Lutheran church of which he was a member all his life. He was married to Miss Helen Lande on Mar. 23, 1899.

To this union one child was born Elizabeth, now Mrs. Jacob Lee of near Huxley. His wife passed away March 9th, 1916.

On Sept. 11, 1918 he was married to Miss Anna Lee. This union was blessed with four daughters, Esther, Elsie, Stella and Freida, all at home.

Though not very well the past few months, he became seriously ill about five weeks ago, when he suffered from heart attacks and a slight stroke. The paralysis gradually got worse and on Sunday, July 7th he was removed to the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines where he passed away July 15th at 20 minutes of 12.

Mr. Hemmingson was a farmer and had lived on the farm which was his home for the last 36 years. He held a number of public offices. He was president of the Farmers' Savings bank in Alleman for some time served as secretary of the White Oak school board for many years and was secretary of the Fjeldberg congregation for many years.

He is survived by his wife and five daughters and two granddaughters, Helen and Pauline Lee of near Huxley, two sisters, Mrs. Stine Johnson of Hudson, S. D. and Mrs. Johnna Johnson of Fairview, S. D., four brothers, Eddie of Fairview, S. D. Oliver of Canton, S. D. and Henry of Huxley.
