Last Rites for Mrs. Melvin Kitchen

In the midst of sorrowing friends the last tribute was paid to the memory of Mrs. Melvin A. Kitchen by the Rev. James Gouchenar pastor of the Panora church at the Napier Methodist church.

The Rev. Gouchenar an old friend of the family officiated at the wedding of Grace Thomas and Melvin Kitchen 35 years ago and came to Napier to conduct the funeral services.

The pall bearers who bore the body to the last resting place in the Ames cemetery were M. L. Colton, C. C. Little, Lee Coffman, Edwin Rex, Delbert Zenor of Boone and Ernest Green of Des Moines.

Grace A. Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Thomas, pioneers of Boone county, Iowa, was born March 2, 1880 and died at 1:45 a. m. Saturday, April 27 at the age of 55 years, 1 month and 25 days.

She grew to womanhood in that community and on January 17, 1900 was united in marriage to Melvin A. Kitchen, also of that community. To this union was born 9 children, five sons and four daughters, seven of whom survive Mrs. George Tripp, Charles, Mrs. Lee Hoffman, George, Mrs. Cleo Johnston and Loyall and Velma at home. Two sons Harold and Melvin, Jr. preceded her a number of years ago.

She was happy in the thought that her children all lived near her in her last moments Besides her husband and children she leaves to mourn her loss two grandsons, Donald George Tripp and Larry George Kitchen who were a great pleasure to her and it was her greatest joy to have them with her.

She leaves two brothers Frank Thomas of Brooklyn, Iowa and Loyall Thomas of Ames, two sisters Mrs. Clarence Rex and Mrs. R. W. Ball of the Napier vicinity. She had been a sufferer from high blood pressure and other complications for 17 years.

Through all those years she carried on and kept her home full of good cheer and love. She had a host of loving friends and neighbors and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
