H. E. BURKHART DIED LAST EVENING

BROTHER OF NEVADA WOMAN PASSED AWAY AT VETERANS HOSPITAL

H. E. "Bert" Burkhart, 63, native son of Nevada and veteran of the Spanish-American War, died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, Thursday evening, January 31, at 7:30, according to word reaching his sister, Mrs. Queen Banks of Nevada.

He had been in the hospital since December 13, suffering from heart complications from which he had been a sufferer for the past five years.

The funeral services will be held at the Brouhard Funeral Home in Zearing Sunday afternoon at 1:30, after which interment will be in the Zearing cemetery.

He leaves besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Burkhart of Cedar Rapids a son John, whose home is at Newton but who is in Florida at this time; and three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Smith and Mrs. Grace Farber of Ames and Mrs. Queen Banks of Nevada. A brother, Charles A. Burkhart, died about 12 years ago at Pierre, S. D., during his second term as Secretary of State of South Dakota.

Hubert E. Burkhart was born in Nevada, September 10, 1871, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Burkhart. Leaving Nevada, the family home was for a time on a farm northeast of Nevada, after which they moved into Zearing, where their father was engaged in the lumber business for a number of years.

There the younger son engaged in the carpenter's trade, served at one tie as postmaster of Zearing and was well-known in that part of the county.

Later he moved to Marion, where he was married and there continued his trade.

For a number of years he was connected with a contracting concern in the building of elevators and similar construction work.

At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war he volunteered with the 49th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, leaving with a company from Marshalltown. While in the service he contracted malaria from which he never fully recovered.
