Funeral Services for Henry Sandvick at Roland Monday

Funeral services for Henry Sandvick, 77, long time Milford township farmer who died on Christmas day, were held Monday. There was a short prayer service at the Bishop Funeral Home in Nevada, after which the body was taken to Roland, where the funeral was held at the Bergen Lutheran church, followed by interment in the Roland cemetery.

Haldor A. Sandvick was born at Skaane Vik, Norway, March 9, 1857. He was the fourth son of Aadne and Helga Sandvick.

When but 16 years old he graduated from a school of navigation in Norway and at this young age he became a full fledged sailor, finally becoming a captain of his father's ship. After having experienced several ship wrecks, he became stranded on a small island off South America where all except himself and two others perished of yellow fever.

Tired of a sea-faring life he then immigrated to America, becoming a citizen of this country in 1891.

January 4, 1894 he was united in marriage to Martha Osheim. To this union two children were born, Helen and Rudolph, Helen passing away in infancy.

For four years he rented a farm north of Nevada, after which he bought what was to become their home for the greater part of their lives. They lived upon this farm until February 22, 1930, when Mrs. Sandvick's health failed, and they were compelled to retire. They then resided with their son Rudolph and family of Shipley, where Mrs. Sandvick passed away Jan. 24, 1931.

On March 1, 1931, he with his son Rudolph and family moved back on the old homestead north of Nevada. Here he resided until Oct. 23, 1934.

On December 23, 1934, in come mysterious manner he fell and broke his hip, which caused his death on December 25.

He leaves to mourn his death his son Rudolph and wife, six grandchildren, Verne, Maxine, Marguerite, Betty, Robert and Patricia Lou; two sisters, Kristie of Marshalltown and Lily of Belmond, and one brother Rasmus of McCallsburg, and a host of other relatives.
