Horst Funeral Held Friday Afternoon

Special to the Journal.
Zearing, Dec. 10--Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Evangelical Church for J. S. Horst, 82, long time Zearing resident who passed away at his home here Tuesday morning, Dec. 4th. The services were in charge of Rev. C. A. Claypool of the local church assisted by Rev. Lookingbill of Nevada. The music was by a male quartet Gilbert Womeldorff, Russell Golly, Max McBride and Glen McBride, and the flower ladies were Mrs. E. J. Tisdale and Mrs. Henry Hoberland. The pall bearers were Willie Young, Chris Muschick, Will Gogerty, Fred Thornton, Fred Smith and John Campbell.

Jacob S. Horst was born Nov. 6th, 1852 in Leitersburg, Pa. [should be Leitersburg, Maryland not Pa.], the son of Christian and Lydia Horst. Later the family moved to Lancaster, Pa. and from there he came west when 18 years old then to Palo, Ill. where he spent several years goring from there to California where he spent a year coming back to Iowa and settling on a farm 5 1/2 miles south of Zearing.

In 1890 he built the home at the east edge of Zearing where he lived until the time of his death.

On Nov. 7th, 1875 he married Florence Welty and to them a son, Daniel Welty Horst, was born. The wife passed away in May 1896 and the son in May 1927. Sept. 15, 1897 he was united in marriage to Mary Belle Shaw. A son, John S., was born but died when two days old. Anna Ailene was born Nov. 10, 1907. He is survived by his wife and the daughter Mrs. E. J. Leichty of Iowa City and grand daughter Dorothy Jean Horst of Norwalk, Calif., a sister Mrs. Annie Phillips of Carlisle, Pa. and two half sisters Mrs. Lydia Martin of Shippensburg, Pa. and Mrs. Hettie Martin of Maugansville, Md.

Those attending the services from a distance were Mrs. E. J. Leichty of Kingsley, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Oberdick, Mountain Lake, Minn., Messrs. Jess Coffin and Jos Koller of Butterfield, Minn. and Jack Liechty of Iowa City.
