MISS BLACKWOOD DIED AT NEWTON

FORMER NEVADA WOMAN PASSED AWAY AFTER LINGERING ILLNESS

A group of Nevada people were in Newton Monday to attend the funeral services of the late Letitia Blackwood, former Nevada woman, who died there Saturday.

Miss Letitia Blackwood, 83, former Nevada resident, died Saturday morning at 9:35 at her home in Newton following six month of failing health. Funeral rites were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 from Morgan Funeral home in Newton by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of Newton Episcopal church. Interment was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

Letitia B., daughter of Joseph W. and Mary Shaner Blackwood was born in Athens county, Ohio June 16, 1851, died Sept. 8, 1934, age 83 years, 2 months and 22 days. She was one of 11 children and the last survivor of her family. Her father was a native of Pennsylvania and her mother of Ohio.

In 1854 they came to Iowa, settled on a farm in Buena Vista township, Jasper county, where parents resided the rest of their lives

She received her education in the rural schools, Hazel Dell academy in Newton and Grinnell college. Taught in rural schools a number of years and later returned to care for her parents in their declining years and remained on the farm a number of years after their death.

The later years of life were spent in Nevada until 1933 when she returned to Newton to make her home. She was a great lover of children and gave a number of orphan children homes at different times. She raised two girls from infancy, Helen Blackwood and adopted daughter and Edna Mae Wickham.

In her early life she was a member and faithful attendant of the Methodist church, but in later years affiliated with the S. D. A. church.

She is survived by two nieces, nine nephews and a number of grand nieces and nephews.
