Sampson Funeral at Bethany Church

Special to the Journal.
McCallsburg, Aug. 7--The funeral of Sam Sampson sr. was held from the Bethany Lutheran church Saturday afternoon, following a short service at the home. Rev. Olaf Holen of Roland officiating. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends. The pall bearers were six of hi grandsons, Selmer Olson, Silas Helland, Millard Michaelson, Leslie Robinson, Harold Sampson and Churdan Sampson. The music was furnished by a mixed quartette, Peter Egenes, Mrs. Ray Skartvedt, Mrs. B. A. Imsland and Otis Helland who sand "Some Day the Silver Cord will Break" and "Abide With Me" with Mrs. John Helland at the piano, and Mrs. O. E. Ritland accompanied by her daughter Charlotte sang in Norwegian "Den Store Hoide Flok Vi Se." Among the pieces on the casket were some used at the funeral of his wife 27 years ago which he kept and requested they be used on his casket. There were several other floral offerings and a gift of money to missions given in his memory. Burial was made in the Warren township cemetery.

Sam Sampson was born in Kvindherring, Norway, April 15, 1848 and passed away at his home in McCallsburg Aug. 1, 1934 at the age of 68 years. He came to Clinton in 1866 when 18 years of age and there met and married Regina Halvors May 31, 1874. To this union were born seven children, five of whom survive the father. They are Mrs. Louise Helland and Mrs. Serene Michaelson of Thompson, Mrs. Christina Robinson of Albion, Sam T. Sampson, McCallsburg, the wife of two sons Carl and Herman and one daughter Mrs. Esther Olson having preceded him in death. He also leaves 34 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Mr. Sampson was one of a family of 14 children of which three brothers Chris Sampson and Oscar Sampson of Garden City and Ole Helvig of Butterfield and one sister Mrs. John Sime of Garden City, survive him. He is one of Warren township's pioneers having lived in and around McCallsburg for 54 year and since the death of his wife and son Carl has lived alone and the family wish to thank his friends and neighbors for the many acts of kindness shown him and them during his illness and death.

Out of town people present at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Michaelson and Ruth, Mrs. Edd Helland, Lester, Irene and Violet, Mrs. Homer Holland and Shirley, Mrs. Lester Holland and Rhoda, Mr. and Mrs. Silas Helland and Beverly and Millard Michaelson all of Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Will Robinson, Leslie, Mildred and William of Albion, Selmer Olson, Ankeny, Mr. and Mrs. John Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Iver Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sampson, Mrs. Christine Larson all of Roland, Mrs. Amos Brekke, Mrs. Clarence Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Erickson, Mr. and Mrs. John Hougan, Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Pearson and B. K. Johnson of Story City, Mrs. John Sampson and children, Mrs. Pickett and daughter, Chris Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Sampson, Mrs. John Sime, Julia, Ed, Ivan, Sam and John, Otis Sampson and family and Mrs. Henning Helgeson all of Radcliffe, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Scoville of Zearing, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Hougan of Nevada and quite a number of others from the surrounding towns.
