Funeral Services for Joseph Springer
Special to the Journal.
Zearing, Feb. 28--A host of friends and relatives sere in attendance at the funeral services held for Joseph Springer of Zearing at the Bethel Evangelical church, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 24.Joseph Springer, only son of Phillip and Ellen Springer, was born June 8, 1864 in Livingston County, Illinois and departed from this life Wednesday, February 21, 1934 at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 13 days from a heart attack after an illness which covered a period of several years.
When he was a lad of ten years he came to Iowa with his parents who located on a farm north of St. Anthony in Marshall county. He spent most of his life in Marshall County.
September 28, 1902 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Rachel Abbott at Webster City, Iowa. They made their home in Huron, S. D., for one year and then returned to St. Anthony where he engaged in farming. In 1911 he was forced to retired from the farm because of injuries sustained in an accident. For six years he was custodian n the schools of St. Anthony then spent one year in the west returning to Iowa and locating at State Center for three years and then came to Zearing where he has resided for the past eight years. He united with the Methodist church about 1895 and later transferred his membership to Bethel Evangelical church in Zearing, being a faithful and devoted member until the last.
His life held many of the good traits that go to make a happy life. Patiently he met and subdued the trials and enjoyed the pleasures that come to all who aid to do the best they can as they are passing; accomplishing many time more than those whose lives have been directed by selfishness and greed with only their own welfare in view It was his desire to spread friendship wherever he went and to those who were callers during his illness. His sorrows and troubles he bore himself. His faith was in God and His ever merciful Spirit his soul is committed.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Lulu Berninghausen, two grandchildren, Hubert and Louise Berninghausen of Golden, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. L. C. Garrett of Naponce, Neb.; three half sisters, Mrs. John Gaunt of Washington, Mrs. Eva McClure of Granice, Ark.; Mrs. Ernest Scott of Fort Scott, Kans.; one step-brother, Frank Malone of Neosha, Neb.; and many other relatives and a host of friends.
The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Russell Deal and Mrs. Walter Tillman. Music was furnished by Miss Ada Young, playing piano solos, "Lead Kindly Light" and "God Will Take Care of You." Rev. Claypool used as his text, the family's request which was II Corinthians 5:1 and John 13:7.
The pall bearers were: Messrs. Ray McBride, Glen McBride, Walter Tillman, Harry LeFever, Charles Barnard and Asa Barnard. Burial was in Hillside cemetery at State Center.
Relatives and friends from a distance in attendance at the services were Mrs. Lula Springer Berninghausen and daughter Louise of Golden, Colo.; Mrs. L. C. Garrett, a sister, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Griffith, all of Naponce, Neb.; C. M. Deal of Des Moines; Mrs. Maria Smith and Dr. Manley Smith of Collins, Mrs. Gussie Ingledue of Minerva; T. J. Warner and Ernest Warner of Clemons; Mr. and Mrs. Ira Eggleston, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Eggleston, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bryant, Mrs. Verle Bryant, Miss Lizzie Flannigan and Mrs. Louis LaPlant all of St. Anthony; George Nolte, Iowa Falls; Minnie Berninghauser of Eldora and Mrs. Arthur Ricks of Iowa Falls.
