Funeral Services for Iowa Center Man

Funeral services for Charles F. Smith, 68, Indian Creek township pioneer, who died rather suddenly at the Broadlawns hospital, Des Moines, Friday were held on New Years day.

There was a brief service at noon at Ames followed by a church service at Iowa Center conducted by Rev. Charles Pickford of Nevada assisted by the United Brethren pastor at Ames.

The church was filled to capacity with friends and relatives of the family and interment was made in the cemetery at Iowa Center.

Members of the choir of the M. E. church of Maxwell, rendered very acceptable service in song. The family have the sympathy of many friends.

Charles F. Smith, son of John T. ad Sarah E. Smith was born June 30, 1866 near Maxwell, and died at Broadlawns hospital, Des Moines, Dec. 29, aged 68 years, 5 months and 29 days. His parents removed to Iowa Center when he was a small child and where he grew to manhood.

On March 20, 1887, he was married to Isabelle A. Guge. To this union ten children were born, five of whom have preceded him in death. There remain to mourn his passing away, his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Jessie Green and Mrs. L. M. Ray, both of Ames, Mrs. T. A. Wilson of St. James, Minn., and two sons, Charles N. of St. James, Minn., and Harlie A. of Gilbert, Ia. He leaves also twenty-four grandchildren, and one great-greatgrandchild.

Four brothers also survive his demise. These are J. R. Smith of Butterfield, Minn., Harry F. Smith of Madelia, Minn., Warren Smith of Woodburn, and George Smith of Iowa Center, together with three sisters, Mrs. Nan Allen of Ackworth, Mrs. Rowena Hormel of Maxwell, ad Mrs. Sarah E. Watts of State Center, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith, living near Maxwell, had driven to Ames to spend Christmas and the holiday week with their children, and while there, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Josie Green, he was taken seriously ill, and was removed to the hospital on Wednesday evening but passed away on Friday evening.

He was a kind and loving husband and father, a loyal friend and neighbor, and will be missed by those who knew him.
