Final Rites Held Here Thursday for George H. Johnson

Funeral rites for George H. Johnson, 82, who died at his home here Sunday, were held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Bishop Funeral home, after which the body was taken to Guthrie Center for interment, being accompanied by a group of relatives and friends.

George Harris Johnson, son of William L. and Catherine (Harris) Johnson was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, May 7, 1855 and passed away at his home in Nevada, Iowa, April 24, 1938 at the age of 82 years, 11 months , 17 days.

The family removed to Indiana in 1874 remaining there until 1878 when they moved to Guthrie county, Iowa, settling in Baker township.

On August 7, 1881, he was united in marriage to Cassie C. Porter who preceded him in death December 2, 1911. Two children were born to this union, Arthur of Scranton and Zella, now Mrs. H. D. Patterson of Nevada.

He with his family moved from Guthrie Center to Carroll, in November 1903 where he resided until 1920.

In 1914 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Rose Sexton who died in 1920. For a short time he made his home with his daughter in Nevada, then returned to his old home in New Jersey for visit. In 1921 he married Mrs. Deborah Walling and they came back to Iowa to spend their declining years.

Mr. Johnson united with the Presbyterian church in his early life, later joining the Christian church in Guthrie Center. In his last years he became a member of the Re-organized Church of Latter Day Saints in Nevada.

He was a faithful church member and member of the IOOF lodge for many years, an honest hard working, kindly father and husband and a sincere friend and neighbor. He lived his life in an exemplary manner, and leaves to mourn his passing his wife, two children and one grand son George H. Johnson II, of Des Moines, together with his sister Mrs. John W. Foster of Guthrie Center, and a number of nieces and nephews.
