THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 24, 1952, page 1, column _. "ALTA MAE YOUNG SMITH RITES. - Funeral services for Alta Mae Young Smith were held at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the Maxwell Methodist Church with Rev. Oren B. Hall in charge. Jean Mohler sang "In The Garden" and "Sunrise Tomorrow", accompanied by Jean Dykstra at the piano. Alta Mae Young Smith, daughter of William and Lareathe** Young, one of the pioneer families of Story County, was born near Farrar, Iowa, August 20, 1884, and passed away in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska following surgery on Tuesday, January 15, at the age of 67 years, 4 months and 25 days. She moved with her parents, when a small girl, to a farm northwest of Collins, where she lived until 1913, then moving to Maxwell. On August 15, 1951, she moved to Kearney, Nebraska. On November 11, 1951, she was united in marriage to Claude Smith of Eddyville, Nebraska. Alta attended Highland Park College in Des Moines and then taught in the rural schools in Nebraska and in the Collins community. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Maxwell and recently transferred her membership to the First Methodist Church in Kearney. She also was a member of Annie Laurie Chapter O.E.S. of Maxwell and a member of the W.S.C.S. of the Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, sister Blanche, and brother Fred. She is survived by her husband, Claude Smith; one brother, Joe of Maxwell; two nephews, Major Roger L. Young of Alexandria Virginia, and M/Sgt. A. C. Young of Bangor, Maine; three great nieces, Carolyn, Sonia and Jane. Also three stepchildren, Claude Smith of North Platte, Lucille Rickertsen of Sumner, and Marjorie Smith of Rhode Island. These and a host of neighbors and friends mourn the passing of this lady, who had spent so many years in Maxwell and vicinity. Those from a distance attending the funeral services were her husband, Claude Smith and his sister, Mrs. E. W. Ruyle of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska; his brother Earl Smith of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Alice Lewis of Kearney, Nebraska, Major Roger Young of Alexandria, Virginia; Marjorie Smith of Providence, Rhode Island and many others. Casket bearers were: Warren, Tom, Roy, Earl, Forest, Ben, Wilford, and Reginald McClannahan, cousins of the deceased. Her remains were interred in Peoria Cemetery beside her parents and the loved ones gone before." **Editorial note - spelling used is from the original newspaper article.
