DEATHS

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon May 9, 1966 for Samuel H. Twedt, at 2 p.m. at the Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland with is pastor, Rev. H. M. Lybeck officiating. Rev. T. J. Alvestad of Story City also spoke a few words at the close of the service.

Mrs. Reuben Erickson, organist, accompanied Harris Twedt, Jr., (a great nephew) as he sang "How Great Thow Art" and Mrs. H. E. Rasmussen, Jr. (a niece) of Atalissa, Iowa as she sang, "In His House Are Many Mansions."

Pallbearers were all nephews of the deceased, Orville Twedt, Leonard Twedt, Otto Twedt, Harris Twedt, Sr., Orris Osheim, and Lawrence Osheim.

Interment was in the Roland Cemetery.

Sam H. Twedt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Twedt was born August 1, 1867 at the Twedt homestead northeast of Roland where the Merle Twedt family now resides. He was baptized by the Rev. C. B. Jacobson and confirmed in the St. Petri Lutheran Church then located east of Story City by the Rev. Amlund.

In 1889 he was married to Alice Christian of Roland. She passed away in 1901. Three children were born to this union,--Herman who died in 1954 at the age of 61, and two daughters, Mrs. Cecelia Wicks and Mrs. Helen Imsland who both reside in Ames.

In 1903 he was united in marriage to Hattie Krohn of Ruthven, Iowa who preceded him in death November 26, 1958. To this union 4 children were born-Allison who died in 1951 at the age of 44, Harold who died in infancy in 1916, Mrs. Jerald Borwick (Anna Harriet) Roland and Samuel of McCallsburg.

Mr. Twedt had been engaged in farming his entire life on his farm northwest of McCallsburg with the exception of a few years in the Estherville community when he farmed with his brother, Joe.

He had been active in church and civic affairs in the McCallsburg and Roland communities. He had been a member of the McCallsburg Elevator board; the Farmer's Mutual Insurance Board; and on the school board in McCallsburg at the time of consolidation in 1921 when the present main school building was built. He was a past trustee and deacon of the Bergen Lutheran Church where he was also the last surviving charter member.

He retired from farming in 1944 and the family moved to the home in Roland. In 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Twedt celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house in the church parlors. In January, 1958 their family joined them in celebrating their 55th anniversary at a quiet home gathering. Mr. Twedt spent his retirement years in gardening and growing flowers which he thoroughly enjoyed.

He was in active health until about a year and a half ago when he suffered a heart attack and since was confined to his home in a wheel chair. The family was very fortunate in having Mrs. Anna Enes, a neighbor and good friend to assist in his care during this time.

Last Thursday morning he suffered a stroke and was taken to the Story City hospital where he passed away the following day at 2:15 in the afternoon.

There were also 10 brothers and sisters who preceded him in death.

Survivors include 11 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Also a sister, Mrs. Julia Osheim of Roland, who is the youngest and the last of his family, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Mildred P. Twedt of Canoga Park, California and Mrs. Mildred L. Twedt of Bettendorf and a host of nieces and nephews.
