Funeral services for Mrs. Kermit Granseth were held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater on Tuesday afternoon.

Fifth grade pupils of the Madrid Elementary School and some of the teachers attended the services in a group.

Julia Marie Jones was born in Scranton, N.D. on April 17, 1910. Her parents were Jay and Anna Jones.

In 1918 she moved with her family to a farm near Redfield. She attended Simpson College and taught school in Runnells before coming to Slater where she taught until 1936.

She was married to Kermit Granseth on May 30, 1936 at the family home near Redfield. Two children, Shirley Ann and George Jay, were born to this union. Julia was a member of the Methodist Church until in 1946 when she joined the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Through the years she participated in civic, church and club activities.

In August, 1970, she resumed teaching and attending Drake University night school and summer sessions and received her B.S. degree in education in 1964. From 1960 to March 1973 she taught in Madrid. A four and one-half year struggle against cancer prevented her from finishing the school and on April 10 she entered Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines where she died the morning of May 25 at the age of 63 years.

Julia Granseth was nominated by her principal earlier this year and was selected as one of the outstanding elementary teachers of America for 1973. The news of this honor came the week she died. The biographies of those teachers chosen each year are featured in the awards volume of "Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America" for their leadership and achievements in elementary education.

Surviving her are her husband, Kermit; a daughter, Shirley Tokheim of New Berlin, Wis.; a son, George of Slater; a brother, Floyd of Redfield and many other relatives and friends.
