THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, August 11, 1949, page 1, column 1. "JESSE PARR LAID TO REST THURSDAY AT MT. ZION - William Jesse Parr, oldest son of William and Mary Parr, was born near Peoria City, Iowa on April 18, 1873. He lived on his present farm for over 66 years except for a few brief periods when he traveled in various parts of the country. On June 6, 1916 he was united in marriage to Lillian Harrand, and to this union two children were born, Jesse E. at home and Mary, Mrs. Paul** Rieff, of Des Moines. Mr. Parr had been a member of the Mt. Zion Evangelical church for several years. Throughout the years his interests were centered in the church and at the time of his passing he was chairman of the Board of Trustees and Sunday School Treasurer. He was a member of the Masonic Order and O. E. S. and he was one of the few who was honored with a 50 year membership card. Mr. Parr was a hard working, energetic man, and was considered a healthy man until a couple of weeks ago when he suffered a heart attack, from which he seemingly had made a rapid recovery. Just this last Sunday he came to church in fine spirits and those present were pleasantly surprised to note how well he appeared. On Monday morning he was about the home, even helping with some of the light duties, and at noon ate a hearty dinner. Son after dinner it became apparent that he was not feeling too well and the doctor was called, but at 3:10 he quietly slipped away to be with the God in whom he put his trust. Mr. Parr passed away on Monday afternoon, August 1, 1949, at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 13 days. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two children, two sisters, Mrs. Dela** Rouser and Mrs. Ellen McQuiston, and one brother, Ben Parr, besides a host of relatives and friends. In God's dear home they are so safe - No suffering, tears or care - And in his time you'll surely find - Them waiting - over there! "God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble" Psalm 96:1. Funeral services were held in the Mt. Zion church on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock with his pastor, Rev. E R. Walter, in charge. Ritualistic services were conducted by Herald Lodge A. F. & A. M. and Annie Lairie Chapter O. E. S. Mrs. Jean Mohler sang "Sunrise Tomorrow" and "Going Home" with Mrs. Ina Larsen at the piano. The many floral offerings were all most profuse and beautiful. Pallbearers were Martin Troup, Harold Link, Barton Ritigers, Ray Martin, H. C. Larsen and W. G. Joor. Interment was in the Mt. Zion cemetery. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Bill Thompson and Cecil Bittner of Runnels, Mr. and Mrs. John Harrand and son James and Sydney and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Klatt of Melbourne; Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Mitcheltree, Mrs. John Knight, Mrs. Robert Owens, Mrs. Robert Brayman, Misses Sadie and Betty Eveland and Stanley Boley, all of Des Moines." "CARD OF THANKS - To all the friends whose sympathy and services were so kindly tendered in the time of our bereavement, to Herald Lodge A. F. & A. M. and the Annie Laurie Chapter O.E.S. and to those sending flowers, we desire to extend our sincere thanks. May the Lord bless you all and spare you such sorrow is our sincere wish. Mrs. Lillie Parr. Jesse E. Parr. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rieff." **Editorial note - all names were double-checked and the spelling used is from the original newspaper article.
