Obituaries

Dr. O. A. Langland

Funeral services for Dr. O. A. Langland, 82, a former Cambridge resident were held from the United Methodist Church in Holstein on Saturday, January 6, with the Rev. Merlin Davies officiating.

Mrs. Chester Challman was the soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Merlin Davies at the organ. Pallbearers were members of Alpine Lodge No. 471 A.F. & A.M. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Kraai cared for the flowers. Burial in the Holstein cemetery.

Masonic services were held at the Hansen-Barker Funeral Home on Friday evening January 5.

Oliver Andrew Langland was born January 25, 1890, in Des Moines, Iowa, the second son of Ole and Tina Langland, who were Scandinavian immigrants. He grew up in Cambridge were he played football and baseball on the local teams and graduated from the Cambridge High School in 1910.

In 1914, he graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and came to Holstein to set up his practice. He enlisted in the U S Army in the First World War and served with the American expeditionary Force from August 1918 through June 1919.

He participated in the Meuse-Argonne offensive with the 7th Division. Upon his return to Holstein, he resumed the practice of dentistry and continued until a broken shoulder forced him to retire in January, 1970.

On October 14, 1926 he was married to Nelle Anderson and they were the parents of three sons, James Oliver, Norman Harris and Gerald Lee. Norman died at the age of two years.

Dr. Langland was active in community affairs, being a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner, a past commander of the local American Legion Post. He was affiliated with the Methodist Church and was a member of the Methodist Men.

He was active in Farm and Town club and in both the old and new Country Clubs.

He was active in the Dental Association and seldom missed local, state and regional conventions. He was one of the original directors of the Holstein State Bank after it was organized in the thirties.'

He also served as a member of the Holstein School Board, and for many years was active in leadership in the local Boy Scout troop. He had been a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and was also a member of the VFW and the World War I veterans. Dr. Langland passed away on January 3, 1973 at the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.

He is survived by his wife, his sons, James and Gerald; two grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard of San Francisco, California, and Lafayette of Cambridge, Iowa, and a sister, Ann Langland also if San Francisco, California.
