OBITUARY OF SLATER MERCHANT

August Peterson, Clothier, was Native of Sweden.

Slater, Nov. 27--August Peterson was born in Jonkoping, Sweden, Oct. 27, 1849 where he resided until nineteen years of age when he came to the United States settling at Rockford, Illinois, in 1869. He was united in marriage to Sophia Linn in September 1872. To this union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters, three of those having gone on before. The living children are Henry, Archie, Van, Mrs. S. E. Shaffer, Mrs. Chas. Rupp, Mrs. J. P. Warren. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson moved to Sheldahl, Iowa, in 1881 and six years later, in 1887, moved to Slater, where the family home has been located. The mother passed away on December 29, 1915. The husband and father departed this life to unite in that cloudless land above, on Saturday, November 16. He united with the church early in life being a member of the Swedish Lutheran in the old country. While a young man he untied with the Methodist church at Rockford, Ill. Since living in the home community here at Slater he had made his church home at the Methodist Episcopal church at this place. He departed from the earthly habitation with the testimony of faith in the resurrection unto life. He had but gone on a little while before to that home prepared for those who love Him. Besides the children are ten grand children, two brothers, one sister, other relatives and a host of friends who mourn their loss. He will be laid to rest in the family acre beside the mother and three children at Rockford, Ill. The funeral service was held a the family home conducted by Rev. Fred W. Ingvolstad, the pastor of his church, assisted by Rev. H. Bjorlie and Rev. Edward Duea of the Lutheran churches. The loved ones who gathered to pay tribute to their beloved father were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rupp and children of West Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Swan Shaffer and Harriet from Stratford, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Warren and Private Van D. Peterson of Camp Merritt, N. J. The others from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Mason of Cambridge, Albert Fallein of Perry, Mrs. Lewis Fallein and daughters, Misses Edna and Florence of Stratford, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Wharton of Des Moines. To all these and the many friends associated in his home, in the church and in the business world, he leaves a memory of a faithful Christian and kindly associations. His loved ones will miss him, his church will miss him and the community will miss him. "We believe in the resurrection unto life, " he said a few hours before departing this life. With such a faith, "O death where is thy sting, O grave, where is they victory."

August Peterson, one of the pioneer clothing men of this county, passed away at his home here, Saturday evening, November 16, from angina pectoris. He had several painful attacks during the week but Saturday they became more severe and at nine o'clock in the evening he passed quietly away.
