THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 24, 1901, page 4. "OBITUARY - Joseph Long, a pioneer resident of Jasper county, passed away January 20, 1901, in his seventy-ninth year. He was born July 4, 1822, in Summerset** county, Pennsylvania. Was married to Lydia Poorbaugh, March 16, 1845. Of this marriage there were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy. His wife and eight children, three sons and five daughters, survive him. Mr. Long with his family lived for three years in Summerset** county, Pennsylvania. In 1847 he removed to Elhart** county, Indiana, where he made his home for seven years. In 1854 he came to Iowa with his family and lived near Colfax for a short time; in March 1855 he came to his present home in Jasper county where he has lived for forty-seven years. He was converted in 1871 and joined the Methodist Protestant church, where he retained his membership till his death." **Editorial note, Somerset County, Pennsylvania and Elkhart County, Indiana.

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 31, 1901, page 4. "OBSEQUY - The funeral of Joseph Long was held at the Buena Vista chapel on Wednesday, January 23, 1901, at 11 a. m. The services were ably conducted by Rev. Henry O. Rosenberger, of Independence, Iowa, a former pastor, under whose ministry the deceased was converted. His text was from the 112th Psalm and the sixth verse, "The righteous shall be held in everlasting remembrance." Comforting songs of hope and trust were sweetly and tenderly sung by the choir. Six of the children were able to be present at the last sad rites, three came from distance, and seven grandchildren. A large company of friends and neighbors filled the church and every attention and kindness was shown the sorrowing relatives. He was borne to his last resting place, in the Buena Vista cemetery, by six of the sons of his old neighbors, who were his associates in pioneer days."
