THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 15, 1903, page 10, column 5. "Iowa Center …. The sad news came today (Monday) of the death of Grandma Higley, who has been spending the winter with her two sons, Curt and Frank in Cawker City, Kansas. She had a fall a short time ago and hurt her hip which resulted in her death."

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 15, 1903, page 4, column 4. "Obituary. - Betsy O. Higley was born in Saybrook, Ashtabula county, Ohio**, August 23, 1817, and died in Cawker City, Kansas, January 12, 1903, aged eighty-five years, four months and twenty days. Mrs. Higley, better known as Grandma Higley, was one of the early settlers of Story county having kept a milliner store in Iowa Center long before Maxwell was ever thought of, she was a lady highly revered by all who knew her and never lost an opportunity to do good wherever she could. She lived to a ripe old age and in her long life performed many noble deed that will live after her. The remains were shipped to this city, arriving Tuesday, and were taken to Iowa Center for interment. Mrs. Higley went to Kansas about a year ago to visit her son, Frank, and was at his house at the time of her death. Mr. Higley accompanied the remains to this city. Thus another bright light is gone out but the deed she performed will live on for many years." **Editorial note - In the obituary of January 22, 1903 Mrs. Higley's place of birth is given as Osage, N. Y. instead of Saybrook, Ashtabula county, Ohio.

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 22, 1903, page 10, column 4. "Obituary. - Mrs. Betsy D. Walton** was born in Osage, N. Y.** Aug. 23, 1817 and died in Cawker City Kansas, Jan. 12, 1903 age eighty-five years four months and twenty days. In 1827 her parents move to Ashtabula county Ohio and in 1836 she was married to Dr. Mason Sheldon. To them were born three children, Helen E.; Hortense M.; and Andrew E.; the two former preceded her to the spirit world. Dr. Sheldon died in 1843. Mr. Sheldon was married to Hector A. Higley in 1845 at Garretsville, Ohio and to this union was born four children; Hattie E.; Hector A.; Frank H.; and Curt M. The family moved to Michigan in 1857 and from there to Iowa Center in 1865 where she has since resided. Mr. Higley died in 1892. Mrs. Higley leaves five children, twenty-three grand children to mourn her departure. She was a kind and loving mother and was loved in return by her family and respected by her friends. She united with the Congregational church when but seventeen years of age and since 1866 has been a member of the Presbyterian church and thus died with a long record of church life. Mrs. Higley was visiting her son Frank at Cawker City, Kan. At the time of her death. The remains were shipped to Maxwell and from here taken to Iowa Center where the funeral was held in the United Evangelical church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. V. Urbino, and interment was made in the Woodland cemetery. Those present at the funeral from a distance were, Dr. Sheldon and Mr. Hotchkiss of Des Moines, Mrs. Hattie E. Will, of Grinnell and Frank Higley, of Cawker City, Kan." **Editorial note - should read Miss Betsy D. Walton instead of Mrs. and in the obituary of January 15, 1903 Mrs. Higley's place of birth is given as Saybrook, Ashtabula county, Ohio instead of Osage, N. Y.
