Jan. 5, 1909, to June 8, 1997

Charles D. Earwicker, 88, of Ames, died on Sunday, June 8, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. The cause of death is unknown, pending the results of an autopsy.

He was born to David and Lucy (McKee) Earwicker on Jan. 5, 1909, in Nevada, where he graduated from high school. After high school, he attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Rhineland, Central Europe, Normandy and Northern France. He received four bronze stars. He was a member of the American Legion in Ames.

He had worked as a mail handler for the U.S. Post Office in Chicago, retiring in 1969.

Survivors include four sisters, Thelma Allie, of Ames, Dorothy Hapes, of Nevada, Ardell Hidlebaugh, of Kelley, and Anna Earwicker, of Ames; a brother, Harley Earwicker, of Escondido, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vern, Harold and Donald; and two sisters, Gladys Torgerson and Lois Earwicker.

Funeral services are being held today (June 12) at 1:30 p.m. at Cooper-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada. Burial will be held at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery with military rites by the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48.
