Military Funeral at Slater for World War Veteran

Slater, Oct. 27--Funeral services for Clarence Larson, world war veteran, were held Monday afternoon 1:30 o'clock at the home of Burton and Tilla Larson and two o'clock at the Bethlehem church. After the brief devotional service at the home the flag draped coffin, accompanied by military escort, was taken to the church.

Rev. E. R. Rorem had charge of the services. The many beautiful floral offering which paid silent tribute to the departed friend were arranged by Mrs. E. C. Rood and Mrs. Will Schaudt. The American flag covered the coffin. Six cousins served as pall bearers. They were Homer Larson of Des Moines, Bert Hokel of Alleman, Ben Hokel of Slater, Arthur Larson, Tom and Elmer Erickson of Huxley. Sums of money from relatives were presented to the mission work in his memory.

Mr. and Mrs. Otis Boyd of Roland sang a duet, "Alone With God." Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson sang two duets, "My Faith Looks Up to Thee," and "The Lights of Home." The American Legion post of Slater formed a military guard of honor as relatives and friends viewed the remains. Burial took place in the Bethlehem cemetery. The military guard of honor stood before the grave. The three-volley salute to the dead was fired and taps were sounded.

T. C. Larson was born on the Larson homestead near Huxley, Jan. 8, 1891, and died at his home in Slater, Oct. 21, 1939, at the age of 48 years, 9 months and 13 days. His parents were Lewis and Anna Larson., both preceding him in death a number of years ago. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. The family moved to Slater after retiring from the farm. He graduated from the Slater schools in 1910. In 1917 he enlisted in the army and was stationed at Camp Dodge. He was honorably discharged Jan. 22, 1919, on his mother's birthday. His marriage to Miss Kathryn Boyd of Story City, took place Sept. 29, 1927, and they made their home in Springfield, Ill., until a few weeks ago when they moved to Slater. One child, Boyd Alan blessed this union.

About four years ago, Mr. Larson suffered a stroke and spent a great deal of time in various hospitals. He became well enough to continue his work for about a year when he suffered a relapse. Although he was able to be out a part of the time, he knew his life was limited and did everything to reconcile his family to the fact that death might come at any time. His courage and cheerfulness were to be admired. He was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife and son Boyd Alan, a sister Tilla Larson, two brothers, Burton Larson of Slater and Austin Larson of St. Paul, Minn., and a host of relatives and friends.

The Thimble club of which Miss Tilla Larson is a member, served lunch at the Larson Home to all the relatives after the services.
