MYRTLE ELEY
Myrtle Alice Wolford Eley, 79, of Zearing, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1981 at the Colonial Manor Care Center, Zearing.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, from the Bethel United Methodist Church, Zearing, with Rev. Tom Pickles officiating. Burial was in the Zearing Cemetery.
Mrs. Eley was born on a farm southeast of Zearing on Oct. 18, 1902, the daughter of Harry Wolford and Malinda Grimm Wolford. She and her brother and two sisters grew up on a farm northeast of Zearing. She attended school through the seventh grade at country schools and completed eighth grade and high school in Zearing, graduating in 1920. She then attended Drake University for two years, completing the teacher preparation course in 1922. For the next two years she taught the eighth grace at Manning, Iowa.
She taught in the Zearing schools during 1924-25 and on Dec. 20, 1924, she married Wilbur C. Eley of Zearing.
The couple engaged in farming southeast of Zearing from then until they retired to Zearing in 1954. After the couple's four children were raised, Mrs. Eley returned to teaching in Zearing and taught in the elementary grades for 12 1/2 years until her retirement in 1968. She was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society in the field of education.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church for 65 years, a member of the Sorosis Club from April 30, 1925; a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star; and was a member of Legion Auxiliary and the Civic Improvement Club.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbur, of Zearing; children Lynn of Mequon, Wisc., Duane and Wendell of Zearing, and Eleanor Herr of Boulder City, Nev.; two sisters, Mildred Teig of Roland and Audrey Fee of Zearing; 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by her parents and brother, Vernon.
