Funeral Services In Slater for Tom Askland

Slater, Sept. 29 -- Funeral services for Tom Askland of Reeder, N. D. were held Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20, at the Bethlehem Lutheran church in Slater at 2 o'clock. The services were in charge of Rev. P. E. Onstad assisted by Rev. Peder Buland of Cambridge.

The floral offerings were unusually large and beautiful, many of them being given by friends and neighbors in North Dakota. A number of gifts to missions in his memory was given by relatives and friends.

The congregation sang the song "I'm But A Stranger Here." Mrs. Fay Scott Nernes of Cambridge sang a solo, "No Night There."

In his sermon Rev. Onstad mentioned the fact that Mr. Askland had presented the large statue of Christ which stands within the altar, to the church a number of years ago. The statue is a copy of the famous Thorvaldsen's statue of Christ in Denmark. Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.

Tom Askland was born in LaSalle, Ill., Dec. 27, 1868. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. The family lived for a number of years on a farm south of Slater also lived for a while on a farm near Huxley. On July 6, 1892 he was married to Emma Jagerson. Six children were born to this union, two of whom preceded him in death. In 1911 he moved with his family to Reeder, N. D. He was a prominent farmer and stock buyer. Mr. Askland suffered a light stroke and was taken to St. Joseph's hospital in Dickinson, N. D. where he later suffered a second stroke and died Monday evening, Sept. 15.

Funeral services were held at Reeder on Wednesday and was largely attended. The body was brought here for services on Saturday. He was about 80 years old.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters: Mrs. Vigo (Alma) Anderson of Reeder, N. D., Mrs. Oley (Lottie) Ryen of Huxley; Mrs. Maurice (Bertha) Bowen of Maxwell and a son, Kermit B. Askland of St. Ansgar, Iowa and a sister, Mrs. Osmond Viland of Denver, Colo., and a large number of relatives and friends.

Among those here for services were his wife, Mrs. Emma Askland and Mr. and Mrs. Vigo Anderson of Reeder, N. D., Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Askland and family of St. Ansgar, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Bowen and family of Maxwell,, Mr. and Mrs. Oley Ryen and family of Huxley, Mr. and Mrs. K. E. Nelson and Mrs. Chas. Hennick of Cambridge and Mrs. and Mrs. Ole Chelsvig of Kelley.
