THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, May 30, 1940, page 1, column 2. "Robert A. Gardner - 1856 - 1940. Robert A. Gardner, son of John and Mercy Gardner, was born near Madison, Wisconsin, of May 1, 1856, and died at the home of his sister,** E. G. Gardner of Cambridge, Iowa, on May 22, 1940, aged 84 years and 21 days. He spent his boyhood in Wisconsin and then came to Iowa with his parents when he was about 11 years old. The family settled in Jasper County. After a few years the family moved to a farm west of Maxwell. On February 15, 1885, he was united in marriage to Ida Meese in Polk County. After their marriage they lived in the vicinity of Maxwell, except for four years in Wright County and another sixteen years at Clear Lake. His wife died about four years ago. As a young man he became a Christian and held a membership in the church in the community in which he lived. A few months ago he received, by transfer of membership, into the Cambridge Methodist Church. Mr. Gardner was well thought of by all who knew him. Surviving are three children: E. C. Gardner of Cambridge, Iowa; Glen Gardner, of Pine River, Minnesota and Mrs. Eland Bates, of Ames, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Ella Jarvill of Laurens, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, many other relatives and a large number of friends also mourn his death. Funeral services were held from the Cambridge Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25th, with Judson T. Perkins, Pastor, in charge. Burial was made in the Graham Cemetery near Mingo, Iowa. **Editorial note - E. G. Gardner is his daughter and his sister is Ella Jarvill so he actually died at the home of his daughter not his sister. **Editorial note - Per ggson Steve Gardner Robert's middle name was "Amos" and E. G. Gardner (Earl Clinton Gardner) is the son of Robert not the sister of Robert.
