Final Rites Held For Charley Skortman

Funeral services for Charley Skortman were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the Riis funeral home and 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran church.

Music was played softly during the service at the Riis funeral home. At the church, Rev. Onstad sang "Rock of Ages" and read the 14th chapter of John. The text for his sermon was "Prepare to Meet Thy God." Elmer Fardal of Ames sang "Beautiful Garden of Prayer" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

The floral tributes were cared for by Mrs. Clifford Swanson and Mrs. Will Walker. There were many gifts to Missions in memory of Mr. Skortman.

Casket bearers were R. G. Nott, E. C. Rood, Swan Johnson, H. W. Marshall, Clifford Swanson and Jonas Christianson.

Obituary

Charley Skortman was born in Madrid, Iowa, Oct. 12, 1868 and died on Oct. 21, 1952 at his home in Slater at the age of 84 years and 9 days.

He was the son of August and Caroline Skortman and was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran church in Madrid, and later became a member of the Bethlehem church in Slater.

He spent his boyhood days on a farm near Slater and came to Slater as a young man working in the Viland and Skortman Hardware store, and later became book keeper at the Nelson & Son general store. When the Slater Mercantile store was organized he became manager and remained in that capacity for many years. He later operated his own grocery store in Slater.

On May 2, 1911 he was united in marriage to Anna Nelson. They enjoyed their 40th wedding anniversary together in May, 1951.

Mr. Skortman is survived by his wife Anna; one brother, Emil of Ames; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Sutherland of Des Moines, Mrs. Anna Cross of Sac City and Mrs. Selma Peterson of Madrid; three sons Kermode, Lawrence and Charles Donald; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Harriett and Dorothy Nelson (Mrs. Cecil Olson and Mrs. Arthur Nelson) granddaughters, were raised by Mr. and Mrs. Skortman following the death of their mother Mrs. Erma Nelson. Mr. Skortman was a nice quiet man loved by every one. Blessed be his memory.
