Last Rites For Mrs. Harriet McCord In Nevada Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Harriett McCord, 85, of Lawton, Okla., a native and long time resident of Story county sere held from the Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Rev. Floyd A. Smith of the Nevada Methodist church officiating.

Organ music was played at the opening and closing of the service.

The casket bearers were Forrest Brouhard of Harlan, James McCord, Storm Lake, Harold McCord of Denison, Clyde McCord of Maxwell, Everett McCord of Colo, all nephews and Harry Maier of near State Center.

Burial was in the family lot in Iowa Center cemetery.

Accompanying the remains to Nevada were the daughter, Mrs. Irwin Ozmun of Lawton, Okla., the son Glen McCord of Neosha, Mo., and the grandson, Irwin Ozmun Jr., of Fort Worth, Texas.

Others in attendance at the last rites were many relatives and friends from Nevada, Colo, Collins and other places in Story county and from Carroll, Harlan, Denison, Storm Lake and Marshalltown.

Obituary

The following obituary of the deceased was prepared and read by Rev. Smith.

"Mrs. Sherman McCord was born Harriett Clothier in Collins township, Story county, on September 12, 1868, and passed away in Lawton, Oklahoma, on January 23, 1953. She had passed her 85th birthday and was the last of an early family that settled in Story county one hundred years ago. Mr. McCord passed away in 1941. They were married on February 15, 1886 and lived for many years in this county but have lived in Oklahoma since the year 1920.

Last summer, when the McCord's celebrated their centennial reunion, Mr. McCord was the only living "in-law" of the original Commodore Perry family, she being the widow of Sherman G. McCord, who was one of the nine sons and daughters of that early pioneer family.

Mrs. McCord was a very active citizen of the Oklahoma community being much interested in the Order of Eastern Star, Rainbow girls, the P.E.O. chapter and the Methodist church. She was a life member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, a fifty year member of the Eastern Star and a loyal member of her church to which she was sincerely devoted.

Her character is best described when it was said of her that she was always interested in people and that she loved her church. That always speaks of unselfishness and faith -- two of the cardinal virtues of the true Christian.

Funeral services were held in Lawton where her pastor spoke appreciatively of her life and service.

We believe it is safe to say that "Her children and grandchildren will rise up and call her blessed" and her memory will long remain as a sweet fragrance to inspire and encourage those who called her their loved one.

Her friends were many and all loved her for her real worth.
