Arntz Funeral Held at Slater

Special to the Journal.
Slater, Jan. 19--Funeral services for Dr. Lew Arntz of Des Moines were held here Sunday at 1:30 o'clock p. m. at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. A. Chader, and at 2:00 o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of Rev. Peder Buland of the Palestine church. He was assisted by Rev. Eugene Williams of the Churchof the Open Bible from Des Moines. Rev. G. C. Swain of the Methodist church and Rev. E. R. Rorem. Mrs. Bert Sutter and Mrs. Dave Schroeder had charge of the beautiful floral offerings. Rev. Williams of Des Moines spoke in loving tribute of his friend who was a member of the church orchestra. Rev. Williams also sang two solos: "There's No Disappointment in Heaven," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Rev. G. C. Swain sang, "Good Night Here, but Good Morning Up There." The men's chorus sang, "The Old Rugged Cross." The pall bearers were Virgil Chader, Martis Scalf and Lester Graves of Des Moines, Merle Chader, Shelby Chader and Ward Chader of Slater. Interment was made in the Palestine cemetery.

Lew Arntz was born March 10th, 1859 in Palestine township. His parents were Simon and Malinda Arntz. He died January 12th, 1933 at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. A. Chader. He was 73 years, 10 months and 2 days old. He was baptized and confirmed in Palestine.

As a young man he graduated from the Des Moines Business college of Optometry at South Bend, Indiana. He was engaged in the jewelry business for a number of years but later devoted all his time as eyesight specialist or optometrist in Des Moines where he practiced the past fifty years and enjoyed a large patronage. Dr. Arntz was also an unusual violinist and composed a number of selections. The church orchestra of which he was a member, attended the funeral services in a body. He is survived by his two sister, Mrs. A. A. Chader and Mrs. Belle Jondall of Slater and two brothers Albert Arntz of Goodrich, Minnesota and Sam Arntz of Alberta, Canada, besides numerous relatives and friends.

Among the Des Moines people in attendance at the funeral were: Mrs. Mabel Scalf and children, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Chader, Miss Baine, Lester Baines, Mr. and Mrs. C. Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins, Mr. and Mrs. Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Frovick and son and Henry Johnson.
