OBITUARY.

Died at Pittsburhg, Pa., Dec. 19, 1895, of typhoid fever, John H. Schoonover, aged 32 years, 3 months and 14 days.

The deceased was well know in Story county. He was born at Nevada, Sept. 5, 1863, his father, Chas. Schoonover, being at that time the editor of this paper. His father died during his infancy and he was reared in the home of his step father W. D. Martin, of New Albany township. He was ambitious and by his own efforts secured a good education. He developed especial skill as a penman and taught writing and stenography at Colo, in Nebraska, at Denison, and finally a college at Pittsburg. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias at Denison, and in his late illness and the sorrowful journey home of his widow, the Knights were able to render assistance. He leaves a wife and a five year old daughter. Mrs. Schoonover and daughter arrived with the body Sunday morning at Colo, and the funeral was held the same day in the Dalton church. The burial was at Nevada Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the Nevada Knights of Pythias and beside the grave of his father in the Nevada cemetery.

From Story County Watchman December 27 1895 (page 4)

The remains of Prof. J. H. Schoonover, who we noted last week died in Pittsburg, Pa., on Wednesday of last week, reached here on Sunday and were laid to rest to await the resurrection morn in the Nevada cemetery, besides those of his father. Mr. Schoonover was a young man of good character, a fine penman with a brilliant future before him when the reaper reached and took him from us. At the time of his death he was instructor in Pittsburg College of Penmanship, a position which he had held in several western institutions before going there. He was loved and respected by all who knew him for his many sterling qualities and all regret to have notice of his early demise. He leaves a wife and one daughter and a host of freinds to mourn his loss.
