Funeral Service for John Carmody, Former Resident

Funeral service for John Carmody, former Story county resident who passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, at the Kings Daughters hospital in Perry was held Friday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Perry.

The Rev. Wm. Winchester of Cleveland, Ohio, was celebrant of the Solemn Mas of Requiem with his brother the Rev. Otis Winchester of Cleveland and the Rev. E. A. Donahue in Perry, assisting. The latter delivered the very impressive sermon.

Interment was in the Catholic cemetery at Perry.

Born in Illinois

John Carmody, son of Patrick and Mary Moroney Carmody, was born March 26, 1873, at Foreston, Illinois. He came with his parents, brothers and sisters to Zearing in Story county, when a young boy. He grew to manhood in that community attending the Sherman township No. 3 rural school. He later graduated fro the Capital City Commercial college in Des Moines.

His first position was in the People's Savings bank in Des Moines, later going to the Rippey bank as cashier. About 1904 he went to Perry as cashier in the Perry National bank. Twenty years later he went to Omaha, Neb., to serve as secretary and executive vice president of the Omaha Federal Land bank.

In 1934 Mr. Carmody joined the resettlement division of the Farm Security Administration and in 1940 became real estate negotiator for the U. S. war department, traveling throughout the United States as purchaser of sites for war plants, hospitals and other facilities pertaining to the war effort. Among various negotiations handled by Mr. Carmody were the Wahoo, Nebraska ordnance plant site and the Battle Creek, Michigan hospital tract.

In 1942 he returned to his post with the Federal Land bank at Omaha but retired from that activity a year later because of age limit. He returned to Perry about two years ago and had since been engaged in the farm loan business for the Connecticut General Insurance company until about two months ago when he had to quit because of the illness which resulted in his death.

Married Margaret Maher

Mr. Carmody married Margaret Maher of Des Moines, June 27, 1906, who survives him. To this union was born one son, Major John Carmody who arrived home after several months overseas as judge advocate general of the 40th Army Division in Korea and was with his father a few weeks before his death.

Always Public Spirited

Mr. Carmody was always interested and active in civic affairs. He held state and national offices in the Knights of Columbus, being a Fourth Degree Knight of the Omaha Council. He was past president of the Iowa State Bankers Association; past president of the Perry Commercial club; members of the Perry Rotary club; a former school board treasurer and a member of the Perry Elks lodge.

Survived by Relatives

Besides his wife and son, Mr. Carmody is survived by his sisters, Mrs. John Maroney of Nevada and Mrs. G. M. Walker of Denver, Colo., one brother, Patrick Carmody of Denver, Colo., four nephews, John and Patrick Carmody of Zearing, Francis Carmody of Nevada, and Patrick Walker of Denver, Colo., and two nieces, Pauline Carmody of Des Moines and Mrs. Geo. Sanders of Saskatoon, Canada. He also leaves 13 grand nieces, three grand nephews, one great grand nephew and three great grand nieces and host of friends.

The pall bearers were two nephews, John and Patrick Carmody, Mr. hall of Ames, and Messrs. Geo. Stephenson, L. P. Tiernan and H. C. Modlin of Perry.

Friends and relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Maroney and Frances Carmody of Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. John Carmody, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Carmody and two daughters, Mrs. Ross Holveck and Barbara Jean of Zearing, Mrs. Stephen Carmody and Pauline Carmody of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carmody of Colo, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Nowlan of State Center, and Mr. and Mrs. Denny Malliett of Kelley and several business associates of Ames, Boone and Omaha.
